HIV-1 DNA PCR, Panel
(Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1, Qualitative DNA PCR with HIV-1 Antibodies, ICMA)
Technology
Nobel Prize winning PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) technology.
Measures as little as 10 pro-viral DNA copies/mL of blood.
Results Turnaround
3-7 business days.
Clinical Use:
Early detection of HIV infection (before 3 months).
Testing children under one year of age for HIV infection.
Assist in clarifying confusing test results, such as repeated indeterminate antibody results.
To identify infection in people with severely compromised immune systems.
HIV Virus Transmission:
HIV is primarily transmitted through exposure to infected blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and/or breast milk. People at higher risk for contracting HIV include:
Men who have sex with men.
Those who have sex with multiple partners. Individuals having unprotected anal sex are at a significantly higher risk for infection.
People who use intravenous drugs.
Other less likely means of transmission include:
Needlestick injuries.
Sharing personal items (razors, toothbrushes, etc.) with an HIV-infected person.
Receiving infected blood through a blood transfusion or organ donation. Rates of this have decreased since the implementation of blood screening technology.
Window Period
Reliable results days or weeks after infection. Conclusive 28 days post exposure, (currently there are no tests in existence that can definitively rule out exposure before 28 days).
